When Should I See A TMJ Dentist?

When Should I See A TMJ Dentist?

TMJ is a potentially painful disorder of the temporomandibular joint. The temporomandibular joint is a hinge-like joint that connects your jaw to the lower skull.

Signs of TMJ include:

  • Jaw, neck, face, and head pain
  • Popping sound in the joint when chewing or yawning
  • Locking jaw joint or stiffness
  • A muscular or exaggerated fullness in the jaw joints
  • Locking jaw joint or stiffness
  • Worn teeth when associated with bruxism (grinding and clenching)

You do not have to experience all the listed symptoms to be diagnosed with TMJ. Early in the condition, you may have only a few signs. However, if you have one or more symptoms of TMJ / TMD, you should probably talk to your dentist.

Fortunately, Dr. Ernest Mantini has provided patients from Johnstown, Somerset, Schellsburg, Bedford, and many surrounding areas with TMJ / TMD treatment.

TMJ and Bruxism

Bruxism is the nocturnal habit of grinding and clenching your teeth. Symptoms of bruxism are similar to TMJ in discomfort, but you may also notice worn down teeth, an increase in cavities, and sometimes even tooth fractures over time.

TMJ and bruxism—together or independent of one another—can significantly impact life quality without proper treatment.

Diagnosing TMJ

If you suspect TMJ, we encourage you to schedule an appointment in our Davidsville or Johnstown dental offices. Our experienced TMJ dentist can evaluate your jaws—including taking x-rays—to diagnose the condition. We can also look for signs of bruxism, which typically includes worn teeth.

During your consultation, Dr. Ernest Mantini will discuss your level of TMJ or bruxism and help you determine the best course of treatment.
